Art at St Mary’s
At St Mary’s Catholic Primary Academy we recognise that Art and Design stimulates creativity and imagination. It provides visual, tactile and sensory experiences and a special way of understanding and responding to the world. It enables children of all abilities to communicate what they see, feel and think through the use of colour, texture, form, pattern and different materials and processes.
We encourage children to explore ideas and meanings through the work of a range of artists and designers. Through learning about the roles and functions of art, they can explore the impact it has had on contemporary life and that of different times and cultures. The appreciation and enjoyment of the visual arts enriches all our lives.
Here at St Mary’s we aim to ensure that all pupils:
- have the opportunity to record from first-hand experience and from imagination.
- develop opportunities to select their own ideas for use in their work.
- develop creativity and imagination through a range of complex activities.
- develop the ability to control materials, tools and techniques;
- increase their critical awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design in different times and cultures.
- develop increasing confidence in the use of visual and tactile elements and materials.
- foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and a knowledge of artists, craftspeople and designers.
Art Impact here at St Mary’s
The Core Seven: Why Art Matters
The realm of art is vast, and its significance has evolved over time. However, there are seven primary reasons why art has remained indispensable to humanity:
- Escape from Reality: Art offers a haven from the every day, allowing us to step into different worlds and perspectives.
- Fostering Community: It establishes a shared identity and sense of belonging among diverse groups.
- Self-Expression and Awareness: Art provides a platform to voice our feelings, thoughts, and identities.
- Contemplation and Reflection: Through art, we can introspect and ponder life’s mysteries.
- Entertainment and Joy: Beyond its deeper meanings, art can also be sheer fun and enjoyment.
- Eliciting Strong Reactions: Art has the power to inspire awe, wonder, and introspection.

The children in year 1 have been studying David Hockney, a British Artist that has contributed to the Pop Art Movement. They began by participating in an art gallery walk of some of David Hockney’s most famous pieces; they then selected their favourite given reasons why. They looked at the primary colours and experimented mixing these to make secondary colours and extended the understanding learning about the classification of warm and cold colours. They used a variety of different paints and tools to create different mark marking techniques and textures. For their final project they sketched two inspired drawings from David Hockney. The first they used watercolour paints and texture skills, the second they improved their sketching skills and used poster paints to improve their overall art using more vibrant colours and tools to create texture through patterns. Finally they evaluated their work as a whole class providing positive feedback.

Y2 have been studying still life by Giorgio Morandi. They have learnt that observational drawing is drawing what you can observe (see). They have been looking at mark-making using different grades of pencil and blending pastels to create different tones. They have used a mixture of different media to create the same marks and to view the different effects. They have been sketching items to create 3d images and incorporating all the skills in their finished work.

The children in year 2 have been studying Edward TingaTinga, an environmental artist. They began by participating in an art gallery walk of some of TingaTinga’s most famous pieces; they then selected their favourite given reasons why. Afterwards they were given one picture of his art work to evaluate what they liked about it incorporating key vocabulary. They looked at the primary colours and experimented mixing these to make secondary colours and extended the learning into mixing and creating tertiary colours and formed a colour wheel. They used a variety of different paints and tools to create different mark marking techniques and textures. They sketched an African animal of their choice focusing only on its head and shoulders. They then selected two complementary (opposite on the colour wheel) colours from the colour wheel and painted this animal with these vibrant colours. They then learned how to create a blend and wash with watercolours as a background skill. For their final project they used vibrant poster paint to create a stunning background blend on recycled material like TingaTinga used; we selected MDF. They added an animal of their choice and used mark-making skills and tools to create texture. Finally they evaluated their work as a whole class providing positive feedback.

The children in year 3 have been studying modern impressionism by Leonid Afremov. They began by participating in an art gallery walk of some of Afremov’s most famous pieces; they then selected their favourite given reasons why. Afterwards they were given one picture of his art work “Fog Autumn Valley” to describe the technique and colours they could see and evaluating what they liked about it incorporating key vocabulary. They looked at a base colour and experimented making colour strips. They created tones of the colour by adding grey, tints of the colour by adding white and shades of the colour by adding black. The children where give an outline of a tree and they selected whether to use warm or cold colours on their tree. They then used their fingers, cotton buds and brush ends to create a dotty, blotchy stye in the style of Afremov. They selected one colour of their choice and used a variety of tools to create different mark marking techniques and textures. They planned and sketched an inspired Afremov piece for their final project, they designed a plan of what tools, paints and warm or cold colours would best suit a blotchy, dotty style. They painted their sketches and finally they evaluated their work as a whole class providing positive feedback.

The children in year 4 began their new topic looking at abstract art by Lee Panizza. They viewed the art gallery and chose their favourite. After they focused on one painting and evaluated it incorporating key vocabulary from the lesson. They looked at a base colour and experimented making colour strips. They created tints of the colour by adding white and shades of the colour by adding black. The children where give a copy of two of Lee Panizza’s famous art pieces with sections missing. They have worked with both watercolours and poster paints to fill in missing sections with the goal as a viewer not to be able to tell where by blending to the original using tints and shades. They created an intricate piece of artwork using shapes of different sizes. They then looked at using one base colour of their choice to paint it using a variety of different tints and shades of that base colour. For their final project the planned and sketched out their design of an intricate piece of abstract art using lines and shapes. They chose warm or cold colours to paint their design, using both watercolour and poster paint to create texture, tints and shades. They evaluated their final piece with positive feedback.

The children in year 5 began their new topic looking at social realism art by Grant Wood. They focused their first lesson on a famous piece called “Young Corn”. They had to evaluate it incorporating key vocabulary from the lesson. Year 5 made pure grey by mixing white and black together. They then started with a base hue and added grey to that hue to create a tone strip. They developed their knowledge and skills has increased by creating different techniques and styles of trees fields, hedgerows and flowers in the style of Grant Wood using water colours. The children created mood boards in the style of Grant Wood using a 16 section board. For their final project they planned and sketched out their design of an inspired piece of art in the style of Grant Wood, the children were ‘magpie-ing’ different elements from different paintings. They used watercolours to paint the background creating tints, tones and shades and using poster paints to create texture through patterns and detail. They evaluated their final piece with positive feedback.

Year 6 have begun their new topic looking at expressionism by artist Vincent Van Gogh whose paintings have highly intense colour juxtaposed with emotions. The children looked at some of his work in our art gallery and chose their favourite piece. They then wrote about the piece Starry Night describing the different techniques of tone, tint and shade. Then looked at his bold brushstrokes and patterns. Finally they explained what feeling they experienced and why from observing this piece. They have created a 5-set harmonious colour strip they have added white to make tints and black to make shades of these colours to compare the effect. They continued their skills set by working with different paints and tools to create a mood board of patterns, styles and textures. They children used harmonious colours to create a sky image using watercolours, to blend and tints, tones and shades to create detail and texture. They designed, planned and sketched out a piece of Expressionism art in the style of Vincent Van Gogh using bold brushstrokes for their final piece.
