What is Sports Premium Grant?

The Sports Premium Grant is additional funding from the Government to improve provision of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools. It is also for improving the health and wellbeing of primary pupils.

How much is the Sports Premium Grant?

Allocations for the academic year 2016-17 are calculated using the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6 and those age 5 in Reception.  Schools with 17 or more eligible pupils receive £8,000 plus £5 per eligible pupil and at Saint Mary’s Catholic Voluntary Academy, we should receive around £8,900 for the academic year 2016-17

How will the Sports Premium Grant be spent?

This grant will be used to improve provision for all our pupils in the following ways:


Sports coaches           


Employing local coaches to provide extra-curricular sporting opportunities throughout the year including; basketball, rugby, football, multi-skills, martial arts, gymnastics/cheerleading and dance



Sports Festivals


Paying for transport for fixtures and festivals


Healthy Week activities

Buying into the Schools Sports Partnership agreement to have access to expert advice in order to evaluate strengths and weaknesses and implement plans for improvement


Securing time for the subject leader to undertake reviews of the PE development plan, 1 day per term

What is the Impact of the Sports Premium Grant?

The impact of this funding has been:

Improving staff professional learning to up-skill teachers.


Increased opportunities for all of our pupils to access a wider variety of competitive and non-competitive PE and Sports

An enhanced and inclusive sport provision which inspires and engages all pupils.

Increased pupil participation in PE.

Improved standards.

Opportunity to develop the competitive element of sports and the skills of sportsmanship

Increased opportunities for our pupils with sporting talents to compete with pupils with similar skills

Improved pupil understanding of the importance of keeping fit and healthy and ways that they can improve their health and fitness.

Pupils who are fitter, healthier and are motivated to continue to improve.

Improved attitudes towards PE and improved behaviour and attendance. 

More confident and competent staff who will enhance the quality of teaching and learning.

How will the Sports Premium be monitored?

The use of the Sports Premium Grant is monitored and reviewed by the PE Coordinator and the senior leadership team.
